[UPDATE: $35 tablet from India surprises all ]
Remmember the initial rumour about an OLPC competitor that could put XO to shame? Some more good news surfaced on indiatimes.com. The 10$ laptop, which had to resemble somewhere the double price Negroponte’s 100$ laptop got to, actually costs $20, with efforts ongoing to get to the $10 target and is to be revealed in Tirupati on February 3 when the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Techology is launched.
Not mush info is available regarding the guts of the device but it’s known that the prototype will feature 2Gb of RAM capacity and DNA, a daily newspaper, has mentioned that it will be “small and portable, will feature Wi-Fi, LAN, and expandable memory, and will operate on 2 watts of power.”
The competition seems to taughen up in smart kids’ land and I am sure that if this baby comes true and will be under $50 and some sort of ubuntu netbook remix or gOS capabilities it will be way more successfull that the OLPC’s attempt. Of course hackers will surely put sugar on it and all children of the world will happily get smarter playing with the toy, while many of the poor class adults will have a way to connect to the internet and improve some of the life’s quality. India, one suggestion though…make it this sexy and I’ll get one for each member of my family and perhaps a few others that can’t afford it:
By the way… China…anything?
Update: big dissapointment as the BIG hope of india’s competition to OLPC isn’t actually a laptop, it’s more of a wirelessly capable storage device that doesn’t even look good and…well…it wasn’t worth all the excitement. See for yourself here or even a more acid criticism here.
