Europe to follow AUS on switching off energy inefficient lights within three years

This is good news for the environmental conscious citizen as the global warming threatens life quality on earth. The 27 leaders of the European Union have decided that all member states will have to use energy efficient lighting till 2010. This comes as a little but important step in the EU’s struggle to cut off greenhouse gases 20% by 2020 – the new target approved by the EU leaders a few days ago.
The final statement of the agreement states that: “The European Council … invites the Commission to rapidly submit proposals to enable increased energy efficiency requirements for office and street lighting to be adopted by 2008 and on incandescent lamps and other forms of lighting in private households by 2009″.
There was also a funny part of the summit which ended with a joking spree, one of these jokes being an adaptation of a very known one: “How many EU leaders does it take to change a lightbulb. Answer: 27”.
I wish that all the 470+ million citizens become “green” and I’ll make one of those in 2 or 3 months when I plan to move in a new apartment, where , of course, all lights will be energy saving fluorescent ones.
