Edison Light Bulbs to retire in Australia
February 21, 2007 § Leave a comment
In a CNN.com video, Seven News’ Gemma Haines reports (February 20) that Australia will phase out millions of household light bulbs in an effort to participate in the global effort of reducing pollution. As far as I know Australia is the first country to actually do something about one of the not so easy to see but very present polluters nowdays. There are some plans or rumours that Edison Incandescent Light Bulbs will be banned as a result of the high inefficiency (it’s known that 95% of the electricity consumed by Edisson light bulbs goes out as heat).
By 2009 people in Australia will learn of Edison light bulbs the same way we learn of our grandparents’ gas lamps. They will have been history. Thus, only Australia alone will speare 4 milion tons of carbon dioxide of beinf released in the atmosphere.
Anyway, the article concludes, the situation is a win-win one, both for the environment and for the household budget.
